O2 Deploys BEA WebLogic Network Gatekeeper to Underpin Mobile Internet Content Delivery

Policy Enforcement and Telecom Web Services Platform Combined with Integrated Suite of Carrier-Grade, Network Enabling Products Supports Strong Customer Growth, and is Designed to Quickly Deliver ROI

06 February 2006

SAN JOSE, Calif.—Feb. 6, 2006—BEA Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: BEAS) a world leader in enterprise and communications infrastructure software, today announced that O2 UK has deployed BEA WebLogic Network Gatekeeper™, the policy enforcement and Telecom Web Services platform component of the BEA WebLogic Communications Platform™ product family, to underpin its next-generation mobile Internet content delivery. As a leading provider of mobile services to consumers and businesses in the UK, O2 is using the integrated suite of carrier-grade, network-enabling products to deliver mobile data services and support strong customer growth.

Implemented and launched in only 16 weeks, on time and on budget, BEA WebLogic Network Gatekeeper underpins multiple content delivery solutions, including i-mode® and O2 Active. i-mode is an easy to use, fast and cost effective way for mobile users to enjoy a world of content from Internet sites they already know. To date, over 100 well-known brands have developed official i-mode sites. These allow customers to do many of the things they typically use the Internet for today, such as banking, shopping, booking tickets or holidays. O2 Active focuses on entertainment and information services. Customers can stream news, sports, and music, play 3D interactive games, download ring-tones and receive wallpapers.

Commenting on the launch of the platform, John Waterfield, Head of Product Portfolio Delivery, O2 said, “We want O2 to be the operator of choice for our service delivery partners, and we want to continue to be considered by our customers as the most innovative and attractive mobile network. Through their work with the Service Delivery Platform, BEA played a crucial role in helping us achieve that. BEA WebLogic Network Gatekeeper performed extremely well during the Proof of Concept stage, delivering a flexible network and application interface. It also gave us confidence and security to be working with BEA Systems—a world leader in enterprise infrastructure software and a company with exceptional experience in the telecommunications sector.”

The O2 Service Access Gateway project is also running on Intel Xeon processor-based HP ProLiant DL380 servers in a Linux environment. This configuration is designed to provide a high performance, resilient and flexible foundation for the Gateway. Waterfield is convinced it was the right choice. “The HP/Intel/Linux architecture is providing O2 with outstanding performance. We have tested the system to manage a significant volume of transactions—helping to ensure that customers aren’t left waiting for the Internet services.”

The Service Access Gateway which supports i-mode is underpinned by BEA WebLogic Network Gatekeeper, a standards-based network infrastructure providing policy enforcement and network access control. BEA WebLogic Network Gatekeeper is a component of the BEA WebLogic Communications Platform, a suite of products based on Internet and telecom industry standards such as J2EE, SIP, Parlay X and IMS, that focuses on enabling the application layer of an IMS network architecture.

Besides helping O2 to bring scores of innovative Internet services to its customers, the BEA WebLogic Network Gatekeeper-based solution is helping O2 to reduce costs by consolidating them onto one unified operating platform.  Similarly, there is also one, unified data model for all of the data services products. In addition to increasing efficiency, this means content providers can track the source of content and see where their transaction is going.

An associated partner relationship management (PRM) portal—residing within a BEA WebLogic Platform™ environment—is designed to manage partner and application registration, approval and maintenance. This allows automation of the transaction and partner information. This automated process is the backbone of the charge-back structure, utilizing the partner relationship module of the BEA WebLogic Network Gatekeeper.
